Abstract: Introduction: Dental trauma is a known risk of difficult airway management, particularly in patients with deep neck infections and trismus. This case describes anterior tooth avulsion during orotracheal intubation in a patient with a submandibular space abscess.
Case Presentation: A 78-year-old male with a submandibular space infection and reduced mouth opening underwent emergency incision and drainage under general anesthesia. Difficult intubation led to avulsion of the upper right central and lateral incisors. The injury was confirmed postoperatively and managed with dental splinting.
Discussion: Patients with trismus and altered anatomy are at high risk for dental injury during intubation. Risk minimization strategies, appropriate airway planning, and prompt interdisciplinary intervention are essential.
Conclusion: This case reinforces the need for dental injury prevention during airway management in high-risk patients and highlights practical steps for early diagnosis and care.
